Program
details:
Session one: Interpretation in a Changing Climate: Changing
The Approach
Presenter Lindsay Burlton
Description This workshop will
reveal successful methods and significant lessons learned
during the first year of a 3-year initiative by six major
North American aquariums. National Aquarium in Baltimore,
New England Aquarium, Monterey Bay Aquarium, Birch Aquarium,
Aquarium of the Pacific and Vancouver Aquarium formed
the Ocean Change Education - Aquarium Network (OCEAN)
to increase our effectiveness in interpreting world ocean
changes. The goal is to provide interpreters with practical
tools for teaching visitors about ocean climate change
and the actions that support healthy oceans. Participants
of this workshop will take away techniques and training
tips for interpreting effectively at their own institutions.
Objectives Participants will:
1. Examine effective ways to frame climate change messages
for visitors, as recommended by
FrameWorks Institute
2. Learn useful tips and techniques for interpreting ocean
change while maintaining an entertaining experience, thus
inspiring visitors to act rather than become discouraged
3. Create and practice programs using new techniques
Session two: The Ecology of Climate
Change
Presenter: Marlow Pellat
Description: Marlow Pellat, ecologist
with Parks Canada, will lead us through some of the scientific
challenges in managing protected places in a changing
world. What is the role of parks as carbon reserves? Can
ecosystems adapt to climate change? Can we adapt to changing
ecosystems? And, is a park still a park without its polar
bears?
