National Awards
Fellow Award - John Luzader
Master communicator, educator and mentor, John is one of the very best professionals in the field of interpretation. With more than 500 publications and over 1,000 interpretive programs througout the U.S., Canada, Europe, and China, he has brought American history to life. He not only makes you laugh and cry, but also makes you think. John has always been an important mentor and strong supporter of NAI's scholarship programs. He is also co-founder of NAI's Cultural Interpretation and Living History Section.
Region 7 AWARD WINNERS - 2010
Master Interpretive Manager - Mary Ann Bonnell - CIM, CIT, CIP, CHI, CIG
Mary Ann Bonnell is the Senior Natural Resources Specialist for the City of Aurora, Colorado Parks, Recreation and Open Space Department. Bonnell earned her degree in Environmental, Population and Organismic Biology from the University of Colorado. Mary Ann uses art, science and enthusiasm to connect people of all ages to the natural world. Bonnell earned the Enos Mills Award for Lifetime Achievement in Environmental Education from the Colorado Association for Environmental Education in 2002 and the NAI Master Front Line Interpreter Award in 2003.
Outstanding New Interpreter - Mary Beth Chappelow
Mary Beth Chappelow is the Interpretive and Volunteer Program Manager for the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Department. She holds a Bachelor's of Science in Wildlife Biology and has previous experience as a grade school teacher. She started at Lone Pine State park in 2008 as a volunteer, moved into a seasonal position and on to a Park Ranger. Chappelow is insistent that the programs at Lone Pine maintain a high quality and follow interpretive principals. She is consistently professional and energetic when presenting interpretive programs.
Region 7 Awards are given annually at the regional workshop or at the Regional meeting at the national workshop. Criteria are determined and nominations received by the Region 7 Awards and Recognition Team. (The Team Leader position for the Region 7 Awards and Recognition Team is OPEN. Master Interpretive Manager - One awarded each year
Presented to a Region 7 member who has worked for a minimum of five years in the profession and whose current duties are at least 60 percent supervisory and administrative. Must demonstrate a mastery of interpretive techniques, site and staff management and a respected ability to pass these skills on to others.
Submit any of the following information to the best of our knowledge:
1) Describe nominee's involvement in interpretation and management, past and present, indicating innovative programs, mentoring experience, creative fund raising, facility development, and management techniques.
2) List key projects or programs developed by the nominee.
3) Attach up to three letters of support.
Master Front Line Interpreter - One awarded each year
Presented to a Region 7 member who has worked for a minimum of five years in the profession and whose current duties are at least 60 percent front-line interpretation. Must demonstrate a mastery of interpretive techniques, program development, and design of creative projects.
Submit any of the following information to the best of your knowledge:
1) Describe nominee's involvement and achievements in front-line interpretation, past and present.
2) List key projects or programs developed by the nominee.
3) Attach up to three letters of support.
Outstanding New Interpreter - One awarded each year.
Presented to a Region 7 member who has worked no more than 5 years in the profession, full or part-time, and who demonstrates a recognized potential in interpretation, assumption of leadership roles, creativity in programming or facility development, and a commitment to the profession and NAI.
Submit any of the following information to the best of your knowledge:
1) Describe the nominee's involvement in front-line interpretation, past and present.
2) List outstanding projects or programs developed. Describe evidence that the nominee has leadership potential.
3) Attach up to three letters of support.
Outstanding Volunteer Interpreter - One awarded each year.
Presented to an individual who serves as a volunteer interpreter in Region 7.
Submit any of the following:
1) Describe the nominee's involvement and contributions as a volunteer interpreter, past and present.
2) List key projects or programs completed by or presented by the nominee.
3) Attach up to three letters of support.
Meritorious Service Award - One awarded each year.
Presented to a Region 7 member who has performed extensive and valuable service to Region 7.
Submit the following information to the best of your knowledge:
1) Describe the nominee's NAI Region 7 related projects or overall scope of commitment to Region 7. (Please limit nomination to one page in total length.)
