The National Association for Interpretation - Region 9
From the sagebrush and silver mines of Nevada to the towering redwoods of the California coast; from the snow-capped peaks of the Sierra Nevada to the white-sand beaches of Hawaii, the Sierra Pacific Region offers many services and benefits to help our members become more closely associated with each other, and to improve themselves professionally.
Interpretation is a mission-based communication process that forges emotional and intellectual connections between the interests of the audience and the meanings inherent in the resource.
Our mission is to inspire leadership and excellence to advance natural and cultural interpretation as a profession. NAI Region 9 complements this mission by providing regional services and opportunities for a diverse membership from Northern Nevada and Northern California to Hawaii and the Pacific Islands.

~Interpretation Chapter Department Operations Manual
From Donna Pozzi - Chief of Interpretation - I am pleased to report that the new Department Operations Manual Chapter 0900, Interpretation and Education, has been finalized and approved. Many of you, as well as your staff, reviewed and commented on this chapter during its development. We also plan on making it available on the department Web site because we know it will be of interest to our many partners and colleagues outside of California State Parks. I wanted to call your attention to some new and newly-revised policies in the chapter. I hope you will peruse the following sections of the chapter as our division feels these are significant issues with which you should be familiar:
- Interpretation Training (0900.3.7)
- Planning for Interpretation (0902)
- Parks Online Resources for Teachers and Students (PORTS) (0904.6.16.3.1)
- Use of Live Animals (native and domestic) (0904.8)
- Intellectual Property (0907), Department Name (0907.7) and the Department Logo (0907.8)
- Volunteers in Parks Program (0908.3), Camp and Park Host Program (0908.3.6)
- Sales of Materials and Services (0909)
Thank you, and please feel free to get back to me at (916) 653-4643 or dpozz@parks.ca.gov with any questions. And here is the link to the actual document. http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=25529
