Sky Rangers Outdoor Astronomy Interpretation Workshop
October 7-11, 2010
Yosemite National Park
This four-day workshop will cover hands-on astronomy activities for outdoor settings, sky navigation, and telescope operation. Participants will receive ten hours of hands-on telescope experience (weather permitting), learn about the science behind the various astronomical objects viewed through the telescopes, hear from experienced rangers on how to organize astronomy events and interpret the sky for park visitors, and develop their own observing lists and constellation tours. The workshop is intended for beginners in astronomy, but will also appeal to those with more experience. There is no workshop or materials fee and lodging and some meals will be provided. Participants are responsible for transportation to the workshop site. Applications are due by June 30 and can be submitted online:http://www.afguonline.org/mod/resource/view.php?id=1857.
2010 CCPH Conference: What's So Funny About History?
October 21-23, 2010
Sonora, California
The California Council for the Promotion of History's annual conference will convene in the Sierra foothill gold rush towns of Sonora, Jamestown and Columbia, October 21-23. Join us to explore the theme: What's So Funny About History?
Funny means comical and clownish, but it also means humorous, witty, surprising, eccentric, satiric, ironic, farcical, absurd, quirky and, in Shakespeare's phrase, wondrous strange.
In these broader senses, much of California history has been very funny. Funny has greased political and economic wheels, disarmed and emboldened, spoken truth to power, and earned this State a reputation for creative spontaneity and a high tolerance for odd-balls. In all of this, funny has been a powerful agent of historical change.
Available in mid-August will be the conference program. If you have questions, e-mail the CCPH Program Committee at ccphprogram@hotmail.com. Info regarding stipend.
